Steak prepared by a former Shangri-La Hotel chef in a humble hawker centre? I didn’t need much convincing to make my way to Ang Mo Kio, where Papa Jones BBQ and Grill has set up shop after moving from their Serangoon location. Naturally, I had to try the Rib Eye Steak (200g) with Garlic Merlot Butter Sauce ($1.90)—the dish that had piqued my curiosity in the first place.
The moment the plate arrived, I was hit with an irresistible aroma. The butter slowly melting over the steak was a sight to behold, and I barely had time to grab my camera before diving in. The garlic merlot butter sauce, made entirely in-house, was as indulgent as I had hoped. A harmonious blend of red and white wine added a deep, aromatic richness that truly elevated the dish.
Medium rare is my default preference for steak, and that’s exactly how I ordered it. For the most part, the steak was beautifully cooked—juicy, tender, and with a stunning sheen that made it almost too pretty to eat.
Accompanying twister fries were decent enough—crispy and satisfying, but nothing out of the ordinary.
I also tried their chicken chop, and it was fantastic. The meat was tender and juicy, with a slight charred flavour that added a nice grilled taste. The mushroom sauce was rich and flavourful, pairing perfectly with the chicken. A simple, hearty dish done right!
